Another Shop Quoted $3600, I Fixed It For $150
Переглядів 23314 днів тому
In this video, I showcase a step-by-step repair on a 2001 Ford Ranger that came into the shop with misfires and codes for running lean. My customer had this truck at another shop where they gave him an estimate for $3600. I properly diagnosed two main issues and ended up fixing the truck for less than $150 in parts, plus some labor.

    Is it still the 5cyl. Because odd numbers just dont seem to wrk well. LS is easy to wrk on and reliable. Why not make a 6 or even 4 cyl built the same way.

    doing my 5.7 now, what a bitch to do. Mis fire cylinder 3, its actually easier than it looks just time consuming. Lifter in cylinder 3 completely snapped the roller bearing apart. Now have to tear about the lower part of the engine to find the broken piece before it cause more damage. Been taking my time removing everything, chemical wash all the parts air dry on racks before I start putting it all back together. Video helped before taking everything apart. now have a garage full of parts spread out every where lol After learning this new skill, I think I can keep this truck running up to a million miles haha

    I have P0500, i have checked the vss sensors, the gearbox (physical check), checked the solenoids, serviced the gearbox too.. I'm currently checking the wiring but have no access to wiring diagrams. I'm no mechanic and i have tried so many different technicians to check the car and it has always been a waste of money. Most of the troubleshooting I've done on my own. I'm troubleshooting the wiring without any diagrams which is difficult. I'll be testing the TCM and instrument cluster this weekend. This problem is quite frustrating. Edit: How do i tell whether its the TCM or ECU that needs to be worked on?

    The family has had the same issue on 18 Silverado and 16 suburban. Both transmissions lasted about 150,000 only because they had regular service. You can't avoid the inevitable torque converter destruction for much longer than 150k. GM's strategy of going in and out of lockup twice a second at steady road speed just wears the converter out. You can see, feel, and hear the engine speed change constantly. It's got little to do with the AFM kicking in and out. The transmission's shift and lockup strategy along with too tall gearing is the issue. Switching to a lower transmission cooler thermostat is a good idea as well. It's an easy job to change, it might get you a few thousand more miles. I wonder if the owners that tow all of the time get longer life from the transmission as the torque converter does not lockup when towing.

  • @Mississippiking03

    The thing about those transmissions is they change gears very slowly. That snap you feel for hitting the gas before it gets in gear, causes severe damage over time. You have to baby tf out of that transmission to get longevity. I'm at 130k on my 2019 yukon. I can tell because i bought the truck brand new and can tell the difference over time.

    Wow, great video! I’m getting ready to have this done to my 2013 Ridgeline. The online forum shows having the valves adjusted at the same time doing this along with spark plugs. Did you remove the plugs to ease turning the engine over by hand? I might attempt this myself depending on the prices I get. Thanks for including the tool links!

    Exactly, that’s why I don’t use anything on the stainless steel shims or slides. Not even hi temp grease, Grease gets hardened too. I learned that 40 yrs ago. Nothing new but mechanics still do it today. There are other reasons why pads wear unevenly too, Too long to explain here.

    I work in a tranny shop. My boss has been in the game for 41 years and he tells me that over the last 4 decades the 1/2 ton chevy truck transmissions have kept him in business. Been there 6 months and its the absolute truth. More 1/2 chevy transmissions than anything. Prolly about 50 of them this year. 5 ford transmissions and 3 dodge. Its insanity

      It definitely could be. I’ve seen that exact issue on these 3.6L engines. But then again, it could also be a bad injector, low compression, a blown head gasket, or a range of other issues.

    I have a 2012 rav4 v6 with 107k miles. Bought it in February with 95k miles. Should I do the transmission flush? When is the spark plus due? Should I be worried about engine/transmission failure? I like watching your video and it’s very educational.

    • @jackhfletcher
      @jackhfletcher 3 дні тому

      The spark plugs are due at 120k miles. Yes, I would replace the transmission fluid every 60k miles. I wouldn’t be concerned with engine failure because by the year 2012 most of these VVT issues were fixed. They mostly had issues on the earlier years. A lot of these engines have water pump failures which can be a pain to replace but one you replace it, you’re good. The 2GR-FE is pretty much bulletproof. And these Toyota transmissions are some of the best in the world. Just change your ATF every 60k and you should be fine. You chose a good car to buy. Some people say never change your ATF if it’s gone over 100k and never been changed, but I’ve spoken to local transmission rebuilders who say that’s a lie and it needs to be changed. It would be like someone telling you not to change your engine oil. I understand the reasoning why people say don’t change it, but I would still replace it.
